Recent contact between President Nikos Christodoulides and UN Secretary-General António Guterres has created positive momentum for the possible resumption of negotiations on the Cyprus issue, Presidential Commissioner Marios Hartsiotis said.

Speaking at the annual doxology held by the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in Athens to mark the anniversary of the start of the EOKA liberation struggle, Hartsiotis described the contact as “encouraging” and said it supports efforts to restart meaningful talks.

UN engagement seen as key to breaking deadlock

Hartsiotis said the continued involvement of the United Nations, reflected in the recent meeting, reinforces prospects of overcoming the current impasse and advancing towards a comprehensive settlement.

He reiterated that the Republic of Cyprus remains committed to a solution based on relevant UN Security Council resolutions and fully aligned with the European acquis. According to the Presidential Commissioner, the government is continuing to utilise all available diplomatic channels to strengthen international support and create conditions for renewed negotiations.

The remarks were made at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens during commemorations marking the April 1, 1955 anniversary. The event was attended by Greek state officials, members of the Cypriot diplomatic mission and representatives of the Greek Cypriot diaspora.
