Concern over the “obstacles faced by Turkish Cypriots born of mixed marriages” in relation to their right to acquire citizenship of the Republic of Cyprus is expressed, as the Turkish Cypriot leader himself writes, in a report by the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, published on 1 May 2026.
This was stated in a post on social media by Tufan Erhürman.
According to reports in the North, in a post on one of his two personal social media accounts, Mr Erhürman claims that the report recommends that the “Greek Cypriot leadership remove these obstacles in a manner that does not introduce discrimination.”
He also noted that similar findings were included in a report by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights published a few months earlier.
“Despite the fact that there have been some initiatives involving partial openings, the problems concerning EU citizenship for our children born of mixed marriages continue. Our efforts to eliminate these practices, which are unacceptable from a human rights perspective, continue and will continue on every platform,” Erhürman wrote.
