*By ACCEPT CYPRUS
In response to recent statements by extremist elements in the political arena that distort the European Union's strategies on LGBTQI+ equality and children's rights, we are issuing this statement to set the record straight and reaffirm our commitment as an organization, but also as citizens of Cyprus, to the principles of equality, dignity, and protection of all persons as enshrined in the UN Charter of Human Rights, the Council of Europe Convention on Human Rights, the Constitution of Cyprus, and the EU itself, of which Cyprus is a member (and which, incidentally, will assume the Presidency of the Council of the EU on January 1, 2026).
These claims are not only inaccurate—they are also dangerous. They misrepresent the EU's approach, which is based on human rights, an integral part of European culture, and they reinforce fear, division, and discrimination in our society. As citizens of an EU Member State, we have a responsibility to defend the values of democracy, equality, equal rights, respect, and human dignity.

We call on all political actors, the media, and citizens to engage in public discourse responsibly. Unintentional and intentional misinformation about human rights strategies undermines our democracy and jeopardises the well-being of every citizen, regardless of age and characteristics.
Let us build a Cyprus where every adult and every child is safe, every family is respected, and every person can live with dignity.
MYTH 1: "The EU promotes gender confusion and brainwashing in children."
TRUTH: The EU Strategy for LGBTQI+ Equality 2026–2030 promotes safety, inclusion, and non-discrimination.
Its aim is to protect children – especially LGBTQI+ children – from bullying, violence, and social exclusion. Teaching respect for diversity is not brainwashing – it is a cornerstone of democratic education.
MYTH 2: "The EU is destroying the traditional family and imposing homogenization."
TRUTH: The EU recognizes and protects all forms of family, including same-sex families. The Strategy on the Rights of the Child ensures that every child—regardless of their parents' identity—has equal rights and protection. This is not about replacing the traditional family, but about ensuring that no child is left behind.
MYTH 3: "Children are being sexualized through LGBTQI+ education."
TRUTH: The EU promotes age-appropriate, inclusive education that fosters respect, empathy, and understanding. It does not expose children to inappropriate content. Instead, it creates safe environments where all children can thrive.
MYTH 4: "Parents' rights are being violated."
TRUTH: EU strategies support parents in raising their children in environments of respect and inclusion. At the same time, they recognize that children are rights holders and that their voices matter. Protecting children and supporting families are interlinked.
MYTH 5: "This is a foreign agenda being imposed on Cyprus."
TRUTH: Cyprus is a full member of the European Union and is committed to its fundamental values. The Cypriot government has already approved the creation of a National Strategy for LGBTQI+ Rights. Human rights are not foreign—they are universal.
Always with appreciation
