A passenger ferry carrying more than 100 people collided with a cargo vessel at the port of Souda in Crete on Tuesday morning, causing material damage but no injuries or marine pollution, Greek authorities said.
According to the Hellenic Coast Guard, the passenger and vehicle ferry Elyros, operating the Souda-Piraeus route, struck the Ro-Ro cargo vessel Iosif K. during departure from the port.
The incident occurred as the ferry was leaving on its scheduled 10am sailing to Piraeus, while the cargo ship was manoeuvring to approach and berth at the quay.
Authorities said the damage was limited to material losses, primarily affecting the cargo vessel.
The port authority has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Following the incident, both vessels were barred from sailing until inspections are completed and seaworthiness certificates are issued by a classification society.
