Cyprus' Customs Department has apologised after content from a specific student organisation was reposted on its official Facebook page, attributing the incident to a possible accidental click by a page administrator.
The repost remained visible on the department's official page for approximately one hour before it was noticed and deleted.
According to the department's management, the incident may have occurred while staff were publishing information relating to a recent seizure of tobacco products at Larnaca Airport.
"The page administrators, as soon as the repost was detected, made every possible effort to delete it and did so immediately," the department said.
The Customs Department's management issued an apology on behalf of its staff, stating: "On behalf of all staff, we express our sincere apologies for the disturbance caused by this unfortunate repost."
The controversial post in question showed pictures of the first President of the Cyprus Republic Archbishop Makarios accompanied by the words in Greek ‘THE ULTIMATE BETRAYAL’.
One of the two photos displayed shows Makarios addressing the UN Security Council on 19 July 1974, where he condemned the Athens-backed coup against the legitimate government of Cyprus carried out on 15 July 1974 and called for the restoration of constitutional order.
