Iran’s president reaffirms that Tehran does not seek nuclear weapons but will not give up uranium enrichment ahead of critical talks with the United States in Switzerland.

Iran does not seek to acquire a nuclear bomb but insists on its right to continue enriching uranium, President Masoud Pezeshkian reiterated just before talks with the United States began in Switzerland in the afternoon.

“This is nothing new and we can also state in writing that we have no intention of building the bomb,” Pezeshkian said, according to the Iranian presidency’s website.

“However, we will not renounce our right to enrichment,” he added.

The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which Iran has signed, guarantees this right for non-military purposes.
