The incident took place in the Ginza district, an area known for high-end retail stores. Authorities said the substance was released near a vending machine on the ground floor, with reports of a strong odour prompting an emergency response.
The streets surrounding the shopping centre were cordoned off, with fire engines and ambulances deployed to the scene. Pedestrians, many of them tourists, were redirected to the opposite side of the road.
An eyewitness reported seeing two individuals being taken on stretchers into ambulances, while emergency crews wearing protective gear escorted others out of the building for medical checks in specialised vehicles.
Japan’s public broadcaster NHK reported that the injuries were minor, while police have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
