Ankara says final work is continuing on legislation to define Turkey’s maritime jurisdiction areas and close gaps in its domestic legal framework.

Turkey’s Defence Ministry has confirmed that final work is under way on a draft law concerning the country’s maritime jurisdiction zones, known in Ankara as the Blue Homeland law.

The ministry described the proposed Maritime Jurisdiction Areas Law as a framework law that would define responsibilities in Turkey’s maritime zones and, according to Ankara, address gaps in the country’s domestic legal framework.

It said the Defence Ministry had been actively involved in preparing the draft at military, technical, academic and legal level, adding that its proposals had already been submitted to the relevant state bodies.

“Final work on the text of the law is being carried out by the competent institutions of our country,” the ministry said.

The move is being closely watched in Greece and Cyprus, where the Blue Homeland doctrine is viewed as part of Turkey’s wider effort to formalise its claims in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean.

The Turkish Defence Ministry said the Turkish Armed Forces would continue “with unwavering determination” to protect what it described as the country’s rights and interests in its maritime jurisdiction areas.
