The President said the Government has serious issues to address, foremost among them the Cyprus issue, and will not get involved in an election campaign.

The Government will not get involved in an election campaign, despite criticism from political parties over alleged handouts and the President of the Republic’s Sunday videos, Nikos Christodoulides said on Monday.

Speaking as he arrived at the annual General Assembly of the Association of Large Developments in Nicosia, the President was asked to comment on criticism that government announcements and his public interventions have an electoral character.

“I have been hearing all this since the first day I took office, in March 2023,” he said, adding that the Government had not taken part in any election campaign. “Others started the election campaign, but we will not be drawn into doing anything of the sort,” he noted.

Reforms

Christodoulides said that he hears criticism about handouts on the one hand, and complaints that no new measures are being introduced on the other. “I will not get involved,” he stressed.

He said there are serious issues requiring the Government’s attention, foremost among them the Cyprus issue, as well as matters concerning domestic governance and reforms. He made specific reference to pension reform and other issues before the Government.

The President also said he respects every party’s right to begin its election campaign and to criticise the Government on a daily basis.
