The ALMA – Citizens for Cyprus Movement has criticised President Nikos Christodoulides over his comments on energy policy and high electricity prices during an interview with ANT1 on Monday.
The movement said the president placed responsibility for the current situation on previous governments without addressing the decisions and actions of his own administration over the past three and a half years.
Five questions on energy policy
In its statement, ALMA asked why:
- Central energy storage took three and a half years to move forward, despite the government now acknowledging its importance.
- Commercial renewable energy projects continued to receive licences without being required to include storage capacity.
- The Target Model was implemented without addressing what the movement described as previously identified market distortions.
- The government rejected a proposal in 2025 to tax what ALMA described as excess profits generated by renewable energy projects.
- No reference was made to the Vasiliko natural gas terminal, which the movement described as a “major scandal”.
‘Citizens want solutions’
ALMA said that instead of accounting for his own administration’s performance, Christodoulides had “returned once again to 2008”.
The movement concluded that households and businesses were not seeking “more excuses”, but lower electricity prices, energy security and what it called “a serious energy plan”.
