With new faces, political messaging and the first symbolic moves of the next political phase, the official proclamation of the 56 newly elected MPs took place on Monday at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre, formally sealing the new composition of the House of Representatives.

With smiles of satisfaction among winners and visible relief from those who secured parliamentary entry, the process, overseen by Chief Returning Officer Elekkos Elia, provided the first snapshot of the new political landscape, with shifting balances, new figures and emerging signals. The first session of the new House is scheduled for 4 June.

Composition of the new House

The process began with the proclamation of MPs elected in the first allocation, based on party standings and preference votes. In Nicosia, the announcement was made by Returning Officer Andreas Hatzipakkos. From AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, Giorgos Loucaides, Christos Christofides and Aristos Damianou were declared elected. From ALMA, Odysseas Michaelides was elected. From DISY, Dimitris Demetriou, Giorgos Pamboridis, Savia Orfanidou, Andreas Constantinou and Charalambos Petrides were declared elected. From DIKO, Nikolas Papadopoulos was elected, from ELAM Christos Christou, and from Direct Democracy Yiannis Laouris, following Fidias Panayiotou’s decision to retain his seat in the European Parliament.

In Limassol, where the process was overseen by Returning Officer Emily Dionysiou, AKEL’s Ephraim Christou and Marina Nicolaou were declared elected, with Christou being the youngest MP at just 24 years old. From DISY, Fotini Tsiridou, Giorgos Karaiskakis and Michalis Fellas were elected, from DIKO Panicos Leonidou and from ELAM Polis Anogyriatis. In Famagusta, Returning Officer Florentia Georgiou declared elected from AKEL Nicos Kettirios and Giorgos Koukoumas, from DISY Giorgos Karoullas, Nicos Georgiou and Giorgos Lysandridis, and from ELAM Linos Papayiannis. In Larnaca, Andreas Pasiourtidis from AKEL and Annita Demetriou from DISY were declared elected, while in Paphos Valentinos Fakontis from AKEL and Charalambos Pazaro from DISY were proclaimed.

Second and third allocations

This was followed by the second and third allocations, carried out by Elekkos Elia. From this process, in Nicosia Konstantinos Constantinou from AKEL, Irene Charalambidou from ALMA, Christiana Erotokritou and Chrysis Pantelides from DIKO, as well as Marios Pelekanos and Andreas Papacharalambous from ELAM were declared elected. In Limassol, Argentoula Ioannou, Michalis Paraskevas, Dimitris Souglis, Michalis Kounnis and Evgenios Hamboullas were proclaimed. In Famagusta, Yiannakis Gavriel, Litsa Drousiotou, Ntaiana Lucia Konstantinidou, Zacharias Koulias and Linos Hatzigeorgiou were declared elected. In Larnaca, Panicos Xiourouppas, Andreas Apostolou, Prodromos Alabritis and Sotiris Ioannou. In Paphos, Dimitris Baros, Chrysanthos Savvides and Nicoleta Constantinou, and in Kyrenia Anastasia Hasikou, Adamos Aspris and Dimos Georgiades.

Political messages

DISY leader Annita Demetriou described the result as a strong message in favour of stability and responsibility, and against populism and toxicity. She said the objective of a strong parliamentary presence had been achieved and that the next phase requires seriousness and consistency. She also revealed that she received congratulatory calls from President Nicos Christodoulides, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Greece’s Foreign Minister.

Political commentary also focused on the presence of Irene Charalambidou, who returned to parliament through ALMA. Her warm exchange with Annita Demetriou and Dimitris Demetriou drew attention, as did her visible avoidance of any contact with AKEL’s leadership.
