The Cyprus Bar Association hosted a large delegation of judges from Ukraine on Thursday as part of an educational and institutional visit aimed at familiarising participants with European legal systems and strengthening dialogue between judicial and legal institutions.
In a statement issued on Friday, the association said its president and members of the board presented the role and responsibilities of the Cypriot legal profession, the disciplinary framework governing lawyers, and the operation of the justice system in Cyprus.
The meeting also included discussions on key issues such as judicial independence, the rule of law and the modern challenges facing European institutions and the legal profession.
War and peace
In his address, the president of the Cyprus Bar Association referred to the continuing Turkish occupation of Cyprus and stressed the importance of peace, respect for international law and the protection of human rights.
He also expressed the solidarity of Cyprus’ legal community with the Ukrainian people and the country’s judicial community, recognising the difficult conditions under which they continue to serve justice and democracy.
The Cyprus Bar Association reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening institutional dialogue and international cooperation at a time of increasing challenges to the rule of law across Europe.
