The Cyprus Department of Meteorology has issued a yellow weather warning for isolated strong thunderstorms expected to affect parts of the island from 9pm on Thursday until 5pm on Friday.
According to the department, an atmospheric disturbance located west of Cyprus, accompanied by an organised band of rain and thunderstorms, is expected to gradually move across the island from Thursday evening.
Western Cyprus to be affected first
Forecasters said isolated strong thunderstorms are expected initially over the western half of the island before extending to other areas as the weather system develops.
Rainfall intensity could reach between 35 and 55 millimetres per hour, with localised outbreaks of severe weather possible.
Hail and strong winds possible
The warning also highlights the possibility of:
- Localised hail.
- Strong wind gusts.
- Winds reaching up to 8 Beaufort in exposed areas.
Warning in effect until Friday afternoon
The yellow warning remains in force until 5pm on Friday, with authorities expected to monitor the system's development and issue further updates if necessary.
Residents are advised to stay informed of the latest forecasts and exercise caution in areas affected by heavy rainfall, strong winds and thunderstorms.
