Localised rain and thunderstorms have developed in Cyprus, particularly in the mountainous areas and inland, in line with the latest forecast from the Meteorological Service.
Video footage posted in the “Kairofiloi Kyprou” (Cyprus Weather Friends) Facebook group shows the weather changing across the highlands, with rainfall recorded in several areas.
The showers come as the Meteorological Service had forecast that clouds developing mainly over the mountains and inland areas would produce isolated rain and thunderstorms after midday.
Speaking earlier to the Cyprus News Agency, Meteorological Officer Panayiotis Georgiou said the weather phenomena were expected to ease by late afternoon, while hail could also occur during thunderstorms.
The rainfall and storms are expected to remain localised, mainly affecting mountainous and inland areas rather than the island as a whole.
The footage from the highlands already shows the change in conditions, with the rainfall providing a temporary spell of cooler weather in affected areas.
Mainly clear conditions expected overnight
Seasonal low pressure is affecting the region, while the unstable air mass influencing Cyprus is expected to retreat from tomorrow.
This afternoon, locally increased cloud cover is expected to bring isolated rain or thunderstorms over the mountains and inland. Hail is possible in the event of a thunderstorm.
Winds will be south-westerly to north-westerly, light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort, locally reaching 4 to 5 Beaufort in exposed areas. The sea will be slightly rough.
Tonight will be mainly clear, although locally increased low cloud is expected along the coast. Later, towards dawn, light fog or fog is expected to develop, particularly over the eastern half of the island.
Winds will be mainly south-westerly to north-westerly and locally variable, light at 3 Beaufort. The sea will be calm to slightly rough.
Temperatures will fall to 22°C inland, around 24°C on the coast and 18°C in the highest mountainous areas.
Temperatures to reach 37°C tomorrow
Tomorrow will be mainly clear, with south-westerly to north-westerly winds of 3 to 4 Beaufort, locally strengthening to 4 to 5 Beaufort in exposed areas during the afternoon. The sea will be slightly rough.
Temperatures are expected to rise to 37°C inland, around 32°C on the west and north coasts, 34°C on the remaining coastal areas and 27°C in the highest mountains.
Mainly clear conditions are expected on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Temperatures will rise slightly on Monday, reaching levels somewhat above the seasonal average, before a small drop is expected from Tuesday onwards.
The brief spell of localised rain and thunderstorms therefore appears to be a temporary change in conditions, with mainly settled and warm weather expected to return across Cyprus.
