Sheep and goat numbers in Cyprus recorded steep monthly declines in May, when measures to control foot-and-mouth disease were in force. These included the culling of animals.
Livestock totals in May
According to figures published by the Cyprus Statistical Service, the number of sheep stood at 14,642 in May 2026, down from 25,174 in April, representing a 41% decrease.
Goat numbers fell by 43%, from 15,247 in April to 8,679 at the end of May.
By contrast, cattle numbers increased by 2.69%, rising from 1,339 to 1,375.
Pig numbers fell by 3.5%, from 44,629 to 43,066, while poultry numbers rose by 20.55%, reaching 1,411,776 from 1,171,116.
Annual comparison
Compared with May 2025, sheep and goat numbers were significantly higher at the end of May 2026, increasing by 55.4% and 30.5% respectively.
Cattle numbers declined by 9.9% year on year, while pigs registered a marginal decrease of 0.7%. Poultry numbers increased by 16.1% compared with May 2025.
