Authorities activate the new early warning system, with test alerts expected in selected areas later this month.

The CY‑Alert early warning system is operational from today, 2 June 2026, providing authorities with a new tool to issue real‑time alerts to the public in emergency situations.

The system enhances operational readiness in cases of crises and disasters, while improving the level of information and protection available to citizens in situations of risk.

CY‑Alert enables authorities to send immediate notifications to people located in affected areas via their mobile phones, including clear instructions on how to respond and protect themselves.

Alerts are transmitted in real time to all compatible mobile devices within a specific area, regardless of mobile provider or the country of origin of the SIM card. Receiving the messages does not require an internet connection or mobile data, and notifications are accompanied by a distinctive warning sound and strong vibration.

The launch of the system is seen as a significant step in strengthening the country’s civil protection framework, particularly at a time when natural disasters, wildfires and extreme weather conditions make rapid and reliable communication essential.

To verify the system’s functionality under real conditions, test alert exercises will be carried out during June in selected areas.

The introduction of CY‑Alert forms part of broader government efforts to improve national resilience to crises, with a focus on prevention, preparedness and the effective protection of citizens.
