Lawyer says public trust in the Police has been seriously damaged and urges immediate action

Revelations emerging in court in the high‑profile case of 14‑year‑old Stylianou, who took his own life, are causing fresh shockwaves within the Police and reigniting public debate over accountability and institutional responsibility.

In this context, and while a total of ten individuals are facing trial, with one police officer being tried in a separate procedure, lawyer Christos Triafillidis has publicly intervened with a sharp message to the President of the Republic, calling for immediate decisions regarding the leadership of the Police and speaking of a serious breakdown in public trust in the force.

In a post on X, Triafillidis calls on President Nikos Christodoulides to act immediately to restore citizens’ trust in the Police.

As he states, trust in such a critical state institution cannot exist when the Chief and Deputy Chief of Police are, according to him, alleged to have been the subject of recommendations by criminal investigators for prosecution, which did not proceed due to interventions by the Attorney General.

Mr Triafillidis describes it as “unthinkable” for these individuals to continue leading the Police while citizens are expected to maintain trust in the force.

Addressing the President, he notes that his responsibility is “enormous” and calls on him to “immediately put a stop to the uncontrolled downward course” which, he claims, the Police have taken in the eyes of the public. He concludes by warning that, otherwise, “the day will come when the state will descend into chaos and lawlessness will run rampant.”
