Cyprus Police have received new complaints from members of the public about fraudulent phone calls made by scammers claiming to represent a financial transactions and payments platform.
According to complaints received by Police on Thursday, the fraudsters call people from Cypriot telephone numbers, which in reality have no connection to the person making the call. They then use an automated voice message instructing recipients to press specific numbers on their phone keypad.
The callers falsely claim that the recipient must confirm or approve transactions or payments linked to them. Police said the aim of the scam is to steal personal data and obtain money from citizens’ bank accounts.
Following the new reports, Police urged the public to be particularly cautious, stressing that the calls are fraudulent.
People who are genuinely expecting online transactions to be processed are advised to verify any calls or messages they receive before completing any payment or transaction. Police said such checks should always be carried out through the official and publicly available communication channels of the organisations involved.
