Sudden Downpour Hits Nicosia After Days of Heatwave

Police urge caution as heavy rain reduces visibility and creates slippery conditions on the Nicosia–Limassol motorway.

Weather conditions shifted suddenly on Sunday, with heavy rain affecting the Nicosia–Limassol motorway in the Pera Chorio Nisou area, prompting police to call on drivers to exercise increased caution.

Summer downpour

A summer storm broke out across southern parts of Nicosia and semi-mountainous areas, with strong winds also recorded in some areas. While coastal areas retained typical summer conditions, inland regions experienced localised storms, offering a brief respite from the prolonged heatwave of recent days.

Impact on the motorway

Police said heavy rainfall was affecting traffic on the Nicosia–Limassol motorway in the Pera Chorio Nisou area. Visibility for passing drivers is limited, and the road surface is slippery due to water flow and accumulation at various points.

Police advised drivers to be particularly careful, to drive at a safe, low speed, to maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead, and to keep their headlights on.

Reaction on social media

Social media users shared videos of the downpours, particularly within the "Kairofiloi" weather-enthusiast group on Facebook.
