Cyprus Congratulates Bangladesh Foreign Minister on Election as UNGA 81st President

Nicosia reaffirms its commitment to multilateralism while thanking member states for supporting the Cypriot candidacy.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has extended its congratulations to the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh, Khalilur Rahman, following his election to the Presidency of the 81st United Nations General Assembly. Nicosia stated that Cyprus will continue to work actively, consistently and responsibly to strengthen multilateral cooperation and promote the principles and values of the United Nations.

In a statement published on social media platform X, the ministry expressed its gratitude to the UN member states that supported the Cypriot candidacy for the presidency during the election process.

Recognition of Cypriot candidate

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs extended specific appreciation to the candidate of the Republic of Cyprus, Andreas Kakouris. The ministry commended his clear vision for a presidency dedicated to practical multilateralism aimed at restoring trust, enhancing efficiency and ensuring that the United Nations functions to the benefit of all global citizens, a platform he presented extensively over recent months.

The official statement congratulated Rahman on his successful election, noting that Cyprus looks forward to a presidency firmly committed to the principles of multilateralism, impartiality and collective action for the benefit of all member states.

Commitment to United Nations principles

Despite the outcome of the vote, the ministry emphasised that Cyprus remains dedicated to its foreign policy objectives within the international forum.

The government affirmed that Cyprus will continue its structured engagement to bolster international cooperation, maintaining a steadfast adherence to an effective, UN-centred multilateral system that addresses contemporary global challenges.
