Cypriot sailor secures the gold medal after an intense final day at the regatta in Croatia.

Cypriot sailor Pavlos Kontides has been crowned European Champion for the third time in his career following the conclusion of the ILCA European Championships in Kastela, Croatia. The venue, located just seven kilometres from Split Airport, functions as a secondary training base where the two-time Olympic silver medallist conducts a significant portion of his professional preparation.

The victory maintains an exceptional career pattern for Kontides, who previously secured the continental title at La Rochelle in 2018 and Hyeres in 2022, effectively climbing to the top of Europe every four years.

Final day drama

The final standings were determined on Friday, 22 May, after race officials successfully completed two final series races. Kontides experienced a mixed performance on the water, finishing fifth in the first race and 14th in the second race, with the latter score being discarded from his cumulative net total as his worst result of the final series.

The Cypriot athlete concluded the regatta with a net score of 39 points, allowing him to retain his place at the top of the leaderboard. He secured the gold medal just one point ahead of Philipp Buhl of Germany, who finished in second place with 40 points.

Regatta trajectory and preparation

Kontides had made a decisive push for the championship lead during Wednesday's races, recording stellar finishes of seventh, third and second to vault himself to the top of the fleet. Unfavourable weather conditions completely halted racing on Thursday, keeping all boats off the water and leaving the standings frozen until the final day. During the opening phase of the regatta, Kontides demonstrated consistency across his four qualifying races, posting scores of 11th, third, third and fifth.

The triumph is particularly meaningful for Kontides, who entered the competition following an injury-disrupted preparation block that restricted his planned training volume.

The campaign of the champion is backed by super grand sponsor Freedom24, alongside long-term major sponsor Allwyn. Additional corporate backing is provided by Ayia Napa Marina, Petrolina, Alassia NewShips Management, the Leventis Foundation, the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation, VITA Group and Hartmann Holdings LTD. His athletic journeys are supported by Nutrica dietary supplements, a product line developed directly from the competitive insights of Kontides and his support team.
