Turkey is attempting to politicise and weaponise reactions in Cyprus surrounding Israeli investments, according to the Israeli newspaper Maariv, commenting on a report published by Turkey’s Milliyet regarding the purchase of land and property by Israeli investors.
According to the report, the Turkish newspaper capitalised on public discussion concerning the abandoned village of Trozena in Limassol district, portraying the issue as part of a ‘broader Israeli entrenchment’ in Cyprus. Maariv notes that the article was published before clarifications were provided by both the local community leader and the investor himself, who denied claims that the church in the deserted village was sold along with former residential properties.
The Israeli newspaper adds that Milliyet linked the developments to the expanding cooperation between Cyprus, Greece and Israel, framing it as a mechanism of pressure and encirclement against Turkey. Turkish analysts quoted in the article argue that the Republic of Cyprus is being transformed into a forward base for Western and Israeli interests in the eastern Mediterranean.
Within the same narrative, reference is also made to claims regarding the granting of security facilities to Israel, as well as to an increased presence of Israeli companies operating in Cyprus, according to Maariv.
