The negotiators representing the two communities are due to meet on Thursday at 11am, ahead of a meeting between President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman on 26 August, CNA reported. The purpose of Thursday's meeting is to prepare the ground for substantive discussion on the issues raised during the UN secretary-general's recent visit to Cyprus.
The Greek Cypriot side's aim for the leaders' meeting is to hold a substantive discussion on the matters raised during that visit, particularly the groundwork for the next expanded conference, according to CNA.
Preparations for an expanded conference
In recent statements, President Christodoulides said this period would be particularly critical, marked by continuous and intensive consultations aimed at securing the UN secretary-general's decision to convene an expanded conference and to announce the resumption of talks. Meanwhile, the United Nations is continuing to record the convergences reached so far in the negotiations.
It is recalled that the UN secretary-general announced, following his joint meeting with President Christodoulides and Erhürman on 29 July in Nicosia, that he had decided to convene a further 5+1 meeting once appropriate preparation had taken place on confidence-building measures, methodology and substance, taking into account the convergences already achieved.
