Iran has announced the death of Majid Khademi, head of the intelligence services of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), according to state media. Another senior officer, Yazdan Mir, also known by the alias Sardar Bagheri, who led Unit 840 of the Quds Force, was also killed in the same attack.

According to official statements cited by Iranian media, Khademi was killed in what was described as a US-Israeli bombardment.

The IRGC said the major general was killed in Iran “at dawn” on Monday, according to a statement carried by the Fars news agency. Authorities added that details regarding his funeral will be announced at a later stage.

Khademi had previously served as head of the Intelligence Protection Organisation and the Intelligence Organisation of the Revolutionary Guards.

Quds Force Unit 840 commander also killed

Yazdan Mir, the commander of Unit 840 of the IRGC’s Quds Force, also died in the strike. The unit has been associated with operations outside Iran, including kidnappings and targeted attacks.

Unit 840 is described as an operational unit responsible, among other tasks, for planning and executing operations abroad against western targets and members of the Iranian opposition. It has been linked to multiple attempted attacks against Israeli and western interests.

Role of the Quds Force

The Quds Force is the external operations branch of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. It is responsible for coordinating Iran’s activities beyond its borders and maintaining links with allied groups across the region.

Through this structure, Iran has developed a network of allied militias and political movements commonly referred to as the “Axis of Resistance”, a regional coalition opposed to Israel and the United States.
