Apple Inc. marked the 50th anniversary of its founding on 1 April, highlighting a trajectory that took the company from a small startup to one of the world’s most influential technology firms.

Founded in 1976 by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, Apple built its reputation by developing consumer electronics and software known for design and usability. Over the decades the company introduced products that reshaped personal computing, digital music and smartphones.

Founding and early products

Apple was established in 1976 by Jobs and Wozniak, with Ronald Wayne initially joining as a third co-founder before selling his share shortly afterwards.

The company’s first product, the Apple I computer, was assembled by Wozniak and marketed by Jobs. The device lacked a keyboard or monitor and was primarily aimed at hobbyists.

In 1977 Apple introduced the Apple II, which became one of the first commercially successful personal computers and helped establish the company as a major player in the emerging PC market.

Setbacks and leadership conflict

Apple faced difficulties in the early 1980s following the commercial failure of the Apple Lisa computer, released in 1983.

Although the company introduced the Macintosh computer in 1984, internal disagreements between Jobs and then chief executive John Sculley led to Jobs losing his operational role and eventually leaving the company.

Jobs subsequently founded the computer company NeXT, while Wozniak also departed Apple.

Financial difficulties and Jobs’ return

During the mid-1990s Apple struggled amid competition from personal computers running Microsoft software and the commercial failure of several products, including the Newton handheld device.

In 1997 Apple acquired NeXT and brought Jobs back to the company as interim chief executive. The move marked a turning point for Apple’s financial stability and product strategy.

Under Jobs’ leadership Apple refocused on its core product line and introduced new devices that helped restore profitability.

Expansion into consumer technology

In 1998 Apple launched the iMac, followed by the release of the Mac OS X operating system.

The company expanded into digital music in 2001 with the introduction of the iPod, which helped establish Apple as a major consumer technology brand.

In 2007 Apple introduced the iPhone, a product widely credited with transforming the smartphone market. The company later launched the App Store and, in 2010, the iPad tablet.

Leadership under Tim Cook

Jobs stepped down as chief executive in 2011, handing leadership to Tim Cook. Jobs died later that year.

Under Cook, Apple expanded its services and product ecosystem, introducing platforms such as Apple Music and Apple TV+.

More recently, the company has developed new technologies including the mixed-reality headset Apple Vision Pro and artificial intelligence features integrated into its operating systems and devices.

Market position and future direction

Apple remains one of the world’s most valuable companies by market capitalisation and continues to focus on expanding its ecosystem of hardware, software and digital services.

Industry analysts note that the company often enters technological markets after competitors but emphasises product design, integration and user experience.

As technology companies increasingly compete in areas such as artificial intelligence, wearable devices and mixed reality, Apple is expected to continue investing in new product categories while maintaining its long-term product development strategy.
