Tourism stakeholders warn that sharp declines in visitor numbers are threatening the viability of businesses and jobs in purely tourist areas.

Call for urgent meeting

Tourism industry stakeholders have sent a letter requesting an urgent meeting with the Deputy Minister of Tourism, seeking information on the government’s actions and intentions regarding support for the sector, according to an announcement by the General Secretariat of POVEK.

Impact of Middle East conflict

According to the statement, representatives of several organisations and associations met last Monday in Ayia Napa, including the Famagusta Association of Leisure Centre Owners, the Ayia Napa Shop Owners Association, the Sea Sports and Recreation Association and the Car Rental Association.

During the meeting, they discussed “the tragic situation businesses in purely tourist areas have found themselves in due to the impact of the conflict in the Middle East.”

Turnover losses and bleak outlook

“The sharp drop in tourism traffic has led to a very significant reduction, in some cases exceeding 50%, in the turnover of businesses operating in purely tourist areas, with very bleak forecasts for the summer months as well,” the announcement states.

Within this context, it adds, the risk to the viability of businesses has become evident, along with concerns for employees who may be left without work for the entire summer season and for the disruption of employment stability.

Appeal to government and unions

“We appeal to the Government, the competent ministries, political and economic stakeholders, as well as trade unions, calling on them to respond immediately and responsibly, recognise the seriousness of the situation and contribute substantially to supporting businesses and workers in purely tourist areas with specific measures and actions before it is too late,” the statement says.

Inclusion in support schemes

It also notes that it is imperative to ensure the inclusion of all sectors of the tourism industry in the existing government support schemes, with the aim of equal treatment for all involved parties and the preservation of jobs.
