The Agioi Anargyroi housing estate in Larnaca will take centre stage this week as part of the MaxalArt 2026 Festival, organised by Larnaca 2030, the body leading the city's European Capital of Culture 2030 initiative.
Over two days, from 30 to 31 October, the estate's streets, courtyards, squares and everyday public spaces will be transformed into places of gathering and co-creation.
The programme will include performances, visual and sound installations, photography exhibitions, workshops, musical events and guided walks, bringing art directly into the heart of the neighbourhood.
Art inspired by local stories
According to Larnaca 2030, the "Synoikismos" Festival represents the culmination of a unique co-creation process.
Since the beginning of October, eight artists from Mediterranean countries have been living and working in Larnaca's neighbourhoods, meeting residents, listening to their stories and collaborating with them on original artworks shaped by the community itself.
"Synoikismos means living together," the organisation said in a statement.
It noted that the housing estates established after 1974 to accommodate displaced people continue to carry memories of displacement while remaining vibrant spaces of daily life, resilience and creativity.
The festival aims to explore the connection between memory, identity and community, while creating a dialogue between the past, present and future.
First major activation of the project
The festival marks the first major artistic activation of the broader Synoikismos project, which seeks to bring contemporary artistic creation into Larnaca's refugee neighbourhoods and foster new relationships between residents, artists and public spaces.
The initiative forms part of the European project MedSEA: Socially Engaged Arts in the Mediterranean Area, which is co-funded by the European Union's Creative Europe programme.
Project partners include:
- Larnaca 2030 (Cyprus)
- Al Badil (Tunisia)
- Li.vi.ng (Italy)
- Busart (Greece)
Eight artists from Cyprus and other Mediterranean countries will participate in the festival.
Further information about the programme is available through Larnaca 2030.
