He is not among the most instantly recognisable actors working today, but he is difficult to overlook once seen on screen. Matthew Rhys has now secured his place in television history with two records set in a single night at the Emmy Awards.

A historic night in Los Angeles

At the 78th Emmy Awards on 14 September, held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, the Welsh actor became the first performer to win a lead-acting Emmy for two different series on the same night. He won for the comedy-horror series Widow's Bay, in which he plays Tom Loftis, the mayor of a haunted island, and for the psychological thriller The Beast in Me (in the limited series, anthology series or television film category), playing Nile Jarvis, a dark and enigmatic real estate magnate.

Combined with the Emmy he had already won in 2018 for The Americans (the series through which most audiences came to know him), Rhys also became the first actor in history to win lead-acting Emmys across all three major categories: drama, comedy, and limited series, anthology series or television film.

A surprised reaction, then a standing ovation

His first win of the night, for The Beast in Me, appeared to catch him off guard. "Oh my God!" was roughly his first reaction on stage, before he turned to his familiar dry humour, joking about the shape of the statuette and his character's dark storyline: "If you're going to mock me, I'll stab you in the eyes with this."

Later, when his win for Widow's Bay was announced, the room gave him a standing ovation. Rhys thanked his collaborators and his family, particularly his parents, saying they had effectively "pushed him onto a stage from a very young age." He also had a message for the people of Wales, adding: "We are a small but mighty nation."

A lifelong connection to Wales

The reference to Wales was no accident. Rhys has maintained a close relationship with his Welsh heritage and language throughout his career. He was born on 8 November 1974 in Cardiff as Matthew Rhys Evans, to a family of teachers, and grew up speaking Welsh. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, graduating in 1996, and spent his early career working in theatre as well as in British and Welsh film and television productions.

Early roles and The Americans

One of his first significant film roles was as Demetrius in Titus (1999), opposite Anthony Hopkins. He also stood out as the poet Dylan Thomas in The Edge of Love (2008) and later in The Post (2017), where he played the political activist and economist Daniel Ellsberg. His major move to American television came in 2006, when he took the role of lawyer Kevin Walker in Brothers & Sisters. The series ran for five seasons and made Rhys recognisable to American audiences, but the role that defined his career came in 2013.

In FX's The Americans (2013–2018), Rhys played Philip Jennings, a Soviet KGB agent living under a false identity as a family man in the Washington suburbs, across six seasons. The role showcased his ability to combine coldness, inner conflict and vulnerability (while also giving him the chance to don a constant rotation of improbable wigs and moustaches), and earned him his first lead-acting Emmy in a drama series in 2018. He co-starred in the series with Keri Russell, and their professional partnership developed into a relationship. The couple had a son in 2016. "We literally haven't got round to getting married," Rhys said in 2025.

Characters with moral ambiguity and darker edges

After The Americans, Rhys played journalist Lloyd Vogel in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019) alongside Tom Hanks, and starred in HBO's Perry Mason (2020–2023), taking on a role with a long broadcasting history, that of Perry Mason, a private detective turned lawyer.

He has continued to gravitate toward characters with moral ambiguity and darker sides. This year, notably, the two roles that led him to his Emmy wins sit at almost opposite ends of that spectrum: in The Beast in Me, his character is a charming but menacing man who is a suspect in his wife's death within the show's fictional storyline, while in Widow's Bay he plays a widowed mayor attempting to bring tourists to an island community that turns out to be cursed and haunted.

Before the ceremony, he had summed up the contrast with characteristic humour: "I spent the year as a psychopath and as a politician, and the Television Academy was kind enough not to hold either against me." In the end, not only did the Academy not hold it against him, it rewarded him for both. At 51, Matthew Rhys found himself at the peak of his television career in a way no actor before him had managed.
