The measure to send SMS alerts to inform and guide citizens on self-protection is under review following the trial activation of the system by the Ministry of Interior.
According to a statement from the Ministry, the test was carried out to assess how quickly the public can be informed in the event that activation of this additional communication tool becomes necessary.
As part of the trial operation, messages were sent in both Greek and English.
Based on the results, it was found that the time required for sending and receiving the messages varies depending on the telecommunications provider. A significant number of subscribers received the message immediately, while others received it with a delay.
However, many citizens from various areas of Cyprus have reported that they have still (20:45) not yet received any message.
The issue is being examined by the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, which is in consultation with telecommunications companies in order to investigate technical options to reduce delivery times and improve the effectiveness of the system.
The Ministry of Interior emphasised that the measure will be reassessed. It added that all existing methods of public communication remain in place should the need arise.
