A 70-year-old road worker was killed on Tuesday evening after being struck by a car while carrying out road signage works on the Nicosia–Limassol motorway.

The victim, Savvas Ioannou, from Paphos, was placing traffic cones in the right lane of the motorway near Moni at around 7.25pm when the fatal collision occurred.

According to the head of Limassol traffic police, Marios Charalambous, a vehicle driven by a 37-year-old man struck a lighted mobile arrow sign positioned in the right lane before hitting the 70-year-old worker.

Ioannou sustained fatal injuries at the scene.

Driver undergoing tests

The 37-year-old driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to a private hospital for examinations. Police said he underwent both drug and alcohol testing, which returned negative results.

Initial witness accounts indicate that the illuminated arrow sign was operating at the time of the crash. Investigators are examining the circumstances under which the driver lost control of his vehicle.

Police inquiries are ongoing.
