The Office of the Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare has issued an appeal to the public to respect the environment and public safety during Carnival celebrations, urging responsible and cautious use of festive products such as foam sprays, streamers and confetti.

In a statement released ahead of Apokries, the office of Antonia Theodosiou stressed that such products must be used with care to protect citizens’ health, preserve public spaces and limit environmental harm.

Health and safety risks

According to the announcement, Carnival products are accompanied by usage instructions and hazard warnings, as required by law, and these must be read carefully and followed strictly, particularly by adults who purchase them or allow children to use them.

Improper or irresponsible use can pose risks to health and safety, especially during large public gatherings. Some products contain chemical substances that may cause irritation to the eyes, skin or respiratory system, particularly affecting children, people with asthma or those with allergies.

The office also warned that use in enclosed spaces or in crowded outdoor areas, as well as direct or accidental spraying on the face or skin, significantly increases the risk of discomfort or injury.

Environmental impact and microplastics

The statement further recommends avoiding lightweight plastic items such as confetti, streamers and balloons, which are easily carried by the wind and end up in the natural environment.

Over time, these materials break down into microplastics, with serious consequences for ecosystems and, ultimately, human health.

Waste disposal and public cleanliness

The Commissioner’s Office underlined the importance of responsible disposal of both the contents and packaging of Carnival products, as well as food and drink waste.

Uncontrolled discharge of foam, plastics and empty containers in public spaces not only causes pollution but also makes roads and pedestrian areas slippery, increasing the risk of falls and injuries and disrupting the smooth conduct of events.

Call to local authorities

A final appeal is addressed to local authorities, urging them to install dedicated disposal bins during Carnival events for used containers and materials, and to ensure their proper management afterward.

The public is encouraged to use these bins and refrain from discarding empty containers or other waste on streets.
