The Greens–Citizens’ Cooperation Movement has raised serious concerns over public health and environmental degradation at the Green Point recycling facility in Agia Varvara, in the Paphos district.

In a statement issued on 19 January 2026, the movement said conditions at the site resemble an uncontrolled landfill and pose an immediate health risk to the public.

According to the statement, the presence of dead animals both inside and around the facility, combined with strong odours and the accumulation of waste, has created pollution hotspots that threaten public health and the environment. Large piles of bulky waste and refuse have, it said, turned the area into a site operating without even basic hygiene and safety standards.

One year later, no reaction

The Greens said they had alerted the relevant authorities to the situation approximately a year ago, through their district coordinator Andreas Evlavis, but claimed there has been no meaningful response or restoration of the site.

They added that the situation is particularly damaging at a time when the Republic of Cyprus is holding the presidency of the Council of the European Union, arguing that the images emerging from the site undermine the country’s environmental credibility.

The statement raises direct questions to the bodies responsible for the facility, including the Green Point operators, the District Local Government Organisation and the Department of Environment, asking what measures they intend to take to restore hygiene and ensure the proper operation of the site.

The Greens–Citizens’ Cooperation Movement called for immediate action and said it expects responses within a short timeframe, warning that the situation has now exceeded all acceptable limits.
