Nicosia Marathon Draws Record 8,000 Runners to Capital Streets

The Bank of Cyprus Nicosia Marathon transformed the city into a global sporting hub, combining record participation, international presence and a strong charitable dimension.

Nicosia was filled with energy and movement this weekend as more than 8,000 runners took to the streets for the Bank of Cyprus Nicosia Marathon, marking a record-breaking edition of the event and reaffirming the capital’s growing role on the international sporting map.

Record participation and international presence

Held under the slogan “The Capital Race”, this year’s marathon set a new benchmark for participation, according to organisers. The event took place under the auspices of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union and attracted runners from across the globe, including participants from the United States, Colombia, Japan, Malaysia and numerous European countries.

Particularly strong interest was recorded in the Cablenet Corporate 5km Race, with teams representing more than 100 companies taking part. Adding a strong social dimension, the Cyprus Anti-Cancer Society was named the official charity of the marathon.

City praised for hosting capacity

Charalambos Prountzos congratulated runners and organisers, highlighting that the event showcased Nicosia’s ability to successfully host large-scale international sporting events and engage both residents and visitors.

Marathon and race results

In the flagship Bank of Cyprus Marathon (42km), Sotiris Psycharakis claimed first place in the men’s category with a time of 02:45:20, followed by Alexander Eduard Julian and Chrysovalantis Tsavalos.

In the women’s race, Karem Williamson secured victory with a time of 03:02:33, ahead of Karolina Wasniewska and Snezhana Beliaeva.

The Stoiximan Half Marathon (21km) was won by Giorgos Tofi in the men’s category with a time of 01:11:09, while Christina Kourri took first place among women at 01:32:27.

In the Petrolina 10km Energy Run, Neophytos Lemonaris and Elia Ioannou emerged as winners in the men’s and women’s categories respectively. Giorgos Tofi also recorded a second win, taking first place in the individual 5km Road Race.

In the Cablenet Corporate 5km Race, The English School Running Team finished first, followed by Ice Power and The G C School of Careers.

Organisation and support

The marathon was co-organised by the Nicosia Municipality, with Bank of Cyprus serving as title sponsor. Organisers described the event as a celebration of sport, community spirit and international cooperation, with plans already underway for future editions.
