Revealing information about how the perpetrators of the Stavros Demosthenous murder fled the scene was presented before the Limassol District Court during the remand hearing of a 31-year-old suspect arrested on Saturday afternoon.

According to the evidence, the 31-year-old is believed to have played a key role in helping the 28-year-old motorcycle rider who drove the getaway vehicle used by the gunmen escape to the north. The suspect used his own car to transport the 28-year-old through the Agios Dometios checkpoint and from there to Turkey by ferry departing from the port of Kyrenia in the north.

From Turkey, the pair travelled by car to Thessaloniki, using the same vehicle. The 28-year-old and his 28-year-old cousin were later located and arrested in Thessaloniki on 30 October 2025.

During his arrest, the 31-year-old initially claimed verbally that he knew nothing about the case. In a subsequent written statement, he alleged that he had travelled alone to the north and then to a port in Turkey, though he could not remember which one. He also said that he and the 28-year-old are childhood friends and that their meeting in Thessaloniki was coincidental, insisting he knew nothing about the murder.

These claims,  are being cross-checked through the assistance of the Bicommunal Committee on Crime, which has provided relevant information to the Cypriot Police.

Getaway vehicle found in Thessaloniki

The car used in the escape both to the north and later to Greece, was found in Thessaloniki at the time of the 28-year-old’s arrest by Greek authorities. Inside the vehicle, officers discovered entry permits issued by the north.

Only one charge is currently being investigated against the 31-year-old suspect, a Greek national of Georgian origin, who appeared before the Limassol District Court on Sunday morning in connection with the murder of Stavros Demosthenous.

While the broader case continues to be investigated as a whole - with all suspects brought before the court in relation to multiple offences - in this instance the 31-year-old is being investigated solely for the offence of accessory after the commission of a felony.

The court ordered the suspect’s detention for eight days. His lawyer raised no objection to the police request.

It is also noted that the 31-year-old is related to the two suspects arrested in Thessaloniki the previous Friday. According to police sources, there is clear evidence suggesting substantial involvement - at least by one of them - in the planning of the murder
