The State Health Services Organisation (OKYpY) (SHSO) has expressed support for the establishment of a National Ambulance Agency, aiming for it to become operational by January 1, 2027.

Speaking on state radio, SHSO spokesperson Charalambos Charilaou said the reform is not centred on service pricing but on ensuring a structured and timely transition of ambulance services from the organisation to the Ministry of Health.

He said key aspects of the process include a full assessment of operational costs, a clear distinction between emergency and non-emergency cases, and improved management of patient transfers. As part of the reform, the possible involvement of the private sector in specific areas of the service is also under consideration.

Charilaou added that SHSO has the necessary expertise to support the transition to the new model, stressing that even if delays occur, ambulance services to the public are not expected to be affected.
