Rainfall totals exceeded monthly averages in parts of the mountains, with strong localised storms affecting several communities.

Significant rainfall was recorded during local showers and intense thunderstorms that developed around midday and early afternoon on Tuesday, mainly affecting mountainous and semi-mountainous areas of Cyprus, with the Troodos range at the centre of activity.

According to data released by Kitas Weather, the highest rainfall was recorded in Prodromos, where 55.5mm fell within just six hours. This figure is particularly notable as it exceeds the area’s average monthly rainfall of 53.6mm.

High totals across Troodos

More broadly, rainfall totals across the Troodos area were elevated, in many cases surpassing 25 to 30mm. The storms were highly localised, with variations from one area to another, but their intensity was sufficient to cause problems in some communities.

Dam inflows remain strong

April is proving to be a highly productive month for Cyprus’s reservoirs, marking one of the strongest inflow periods in recent decades. According to data from the Water Development Department, total inflows for the month have already reached 22.026 million cubic metres, placing April 2026 second only to 1987–1988, when systematic recording began following the construction of major dams.

Despite the strong performance, current estimates suggest that the record set in April 2019 is unlikely to be surpassed. Based on existing data and expected weather patterns, total inflows for the month are projected to reach between 23 and 24 million cubic metres.

In recent days, inflows have shown a natural slowdown, though not at a level that raises concern. Reservoirs continue to be replenished at a steady rate of approximately 0.4 million cubic metres per day, which is considered satisfactory for the season.

The improvement is also evident in smaller reservoirs. The Vyzakia dam, which was effectively dry last December with storage at just 0.1%, reached overflow on Sunday, 26 April. It is the ninth small dam to overflow this year, underlining the marked recovery in water reserves.
