Drousiotis Hits Back Over 'Sandy' Recording

Journalist describes police action as "prime example of unreliability"

Journalist and Volt parliamentary candidate Makarios Drousiotis has levelled sharp criticism at the police over their handling of developments related to an audio message linked to the “Sandy” case.

In a post, he claimed that for three weeks police have focused on “constructing scenarios” to show the messages are fabricated, rather than investigating their substance.

Dispute over audio analysis

Referring to the latest development in the case, Drousiotis pointed to analysis by Dinos Pastos of an audio message published by journalist Stelios Orphanides, in which “Sandy” is purportedly heard announcing her arrival in Germany.

The recording includes a segment in German which, according to Pastos, “is not authentic” but originates from a documentary aired by Arte, titled “Venezuela - Das bittere Erbe des Hugo Chávez”.

Drousiotis said the message was received, according to Orphanides, on 11 March 2021 at 11:50 Central European Time. He added that Panayiotis Charalambous had identified that the documentary was broadcast the same day at 10:15 local time by Deutsche Welle.

He further noted that, according to Pastos, the relevant excerpt appears at 43 minutes and 35 seconds – a timing he said coincides with the sending of the audio message.

Questions over timing and process

Drousiotis raised questions about how the analysis was conducted, asking how many hours were needed to locate a few seconds of audio within a vast volume of data and whether this was done privately or as part of professional work. He also argued that before deeming the audio inauthentic, investigators should have examined whether the excerpt was being broadcast on television at that time.

The journalist described the police approach as a “blatant example of unreliability”, alleging that resources are being spent on disproving information rather than verifying it.

The “Sandy” case, which centres on allegations supported by messages and audio material submitted to authorities, remains under investigation, with disputes continuing over the authenticity of key evidence.
