Turkish Cypriot trade unions are continuing their strike action for another day in the north, escalating their reaction to the freezing of the cost of living allowance (CoLA).

Public sector unions are once again staging strikes and protests, maintaining pressure on the “government”, which has rejected calls to withdraw both the relevant “bill” and the “decree with the force of law” issued last week.

According to the Turkish Cypriot press, Türk-Sen union leader Arslan Bıçaklı, speaking at yesterday’s mobilisation on behalf of the unions, said that “society has lost its trust in the government”, stressing that “we will continue our mobilisations at the parliament until this law is withdrawn”.

He added that at 09:00 union members would once again gather outside the “parliament”, while “public hospitals will suspend operations except for strictly emergency cases”.

Bıçaklı also warned that if there is no response from the “government”, “there will be further surprises”.
