The mutual will to further strengthen strategic relations between Cyprus and the United States, as well as Cyprus’ significant role in the region, were underlined during a meeting on Saturday between President Nikos Christodoulides and a delegation of US senators at the Presidential Palace.
Welcoming the American officials, Christodoulides said Cyprus–US relations are at a high level across all sectors, noting strong political will to further enhance bilateral cooperation in areas such as defence and security, as well as political dialogue.
Common interests and challenges
He expressed satisfaction with the strategic dialogue launched between the two countries and referred to his recent tour of several US states aimed at attracting investment to Cyprus, describing the outcomes as highly positive.
The President also indicated that he plans to visit the United States again later this year, travelling to additional destinations within the country.
He said discussions with the senators would also cover regional geopolitical developments, stressing that Cyprus and the US share common interests and challenges in the wider area.
Closer ties with EU
Christodoulides further highlighted the importance of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union, noting that one of its key priorities is to bring the United States and the European Union closer together.
“For us, transatlantic ties are extremely important — important for the EU and for the Western world,” he said, expressing appreciation for bipartisan support from the US Congress. “As regards relations between our two countries and what we can achieve together — and this is our political will — there are tremendous prospects.”
Speaking on behalf of the US delegation, Senator Jerry Moran referred to the President’s significant role in strengthening bilateral ties and voiced a desire to see relations continue to grow.
He underlined Cyprus’ importance in the region and stressed how vital it is for the United States to have Cyprus as an ally and friend for its national security and economic interests. He also highlighted President Christodoulides’ leadership role within the EU and Cyprus’ position as a bridge between West and East.
“We are fortunate that you are President of the Republic of Cyprus at this time — and perhaps at any time,” Moran said.
