AKEL has sharply criticised Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos over remarks made about US President Donald Trump, describing them as “embarrassing and politically problematic.”
In a written statement, the party accused Kombos of expressing admiration for Trump during an interview with an American media outlet and inviting him to visit Cyprus “with open arms.”
Criticism over public praise
According to AKEL, the foreign minister praised Trump as being in a “unique position to redefine the global order” and commended what he described as a “decisive” approach to international relations.
The party said such statements raise serious concerns, arguing that neither Kombos nor the government appear troubled by what it described as “incendiary and unlawful actions” by the US president on the global stage.
AKEL further claimed that the Trump administration undermines the United Nations, erodes fundamental principles of international law, engages in aggressive actions toward sovereign states and launches trade disputes affecting European societies.
Warning over foreign policy direction
The party also criticised what it described as the government’s continued alignment with Washington.
“The Christodoulides government insists on tying our country, to the point of subservience, to the United States and the Trump administration, disregarding the consequences this will have for Cyprus,” AKEL stated.
It argued that the credibility of the Republic of Cyprus has historically rested on its commitment to international law and United Nations resolutions, which it described as the country’s most effective diplomatic shield.
AKEL further accused the government of applying double standards, saying that sensitivities expressed regarding international law in the context of the war in Ukraine “disappear” when the United States or Israel are involved.
“Does not honour the country”
Concluding its statement, AKEL said that “flattery toward Trump neither honours the country and its dignity nor will it produce the results the government imagines.”
The party reiterated that Cyprus’ long-term interests lie in safeguarding its international credibility and adherence to international law.
