When asked if he had communicated with the Turkish Cypriot leader, he said that repeated attempts were made on his side from the very first night of the elections, but this was not possible.
“We will all be judged at the negotiation table,” President Christodoulides stated on Tuesday, when asked to comment on the positions of the new Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhürman.
Speaking after the student parade in Nicosia for October 28th, and responding to a journalist’s comment , among other things, that the new TC leader did not mention a Bizonal, Bicommunal Federation in his statements, the President said that he reads the Turkish Cypriot leader’s statements daily. He added that he has been involved in the Cyprus issue for many years, in various capacities, and has heard and read a lot.
“What I would like to mention today, also answering your question, is that we will all be judged at the negotiation table,” he noted.
He said, “We, above all, desire more than anyone else the end of the occupation, the liberation, and the reunification of our homeland. We do not fear negotiations because we know where we want to go, we know how we will achieve our goal, and we are ready to negotiate within the framework of the United Nations, and the principles and values of the European Union.”
When asked if he had communicated with the Turkish Cypriot leader, he said that repeated attempts were made on his side from the very first night [of Erhürman’s rise to leadership], but this was not possible.
President Christodoulides added that last week, when he was in Brussels, he received a phone call during the European Council, and when he tried again to communicate, there was no response.
Regarding today, the President said that we honor the struggle of Greece and the Greek people, the struggle for universal human values, against Nazism and fascism.
He added that in this struggle, thousands of Greeks from Cyprus stood by their brothers to defend Greece and humanity.
“As I have repeatedly stated, beyond the parades and events, which, of course, we will continue to organise, the most important thing after so many years is to draw the necessary lessons from such struggles,” he said.
In our case, he said, “the lesson can be nothing other than the relentless struggle until final vindication, until liberation, the end of the occupation, and the reunification of our homeland.”
The President of the Republic also noted that in this direction, utilizing all the factors of our country’s power, internal and external, we will continue this great effort until the blessed day of liberation and reunification of our homeland.
