With the submission of the bill, it is expected that the number of parliamentary seats and the official date for the 2026 parliamentary elections will be finalised, said House Speaker, Annita Demetriou, Tuesday, in response to journalists’ questions on the sidelines of the student parade for the 28th of October anniversary in Nicosia.
When asked whether the election date might be moved due to the EuroLeague Final Four and the Iron Maiden concert in Athens, Ms. Dimitriou replied that the final date for the parliamentary elections is expected to be finalized after the submission of the bill, which will also determine the number of parliamentary seats. She added, however, that “there is nothing different at this time” regarding the date.
"Whatever the date may be, we must be fully prepared, and with the proper preparation, the Parliament will be able to receive exactly the result of the citizens and of democracy," Demetriou continued .
Regarding the anniversary of October 28th, she noted that “it is recorded in world history as the modern miracle of Hellenism,” adding that “when Greeks unite around ideals and justice, no one can bend them.”
She continued by saying that “it is on the ashes of World War II that Europe of cooperation, justice, and solidarity was built, which today, unfortunately, is threatened by the voices of extremes and populism.”
"We should remember these lessons so that we do not go through the same again," she concluded, congratulating the students who participated in the parade.
