The Cypriot government is continuing its outreach efforts in the United States with a third interview this year with the ‘alt-right’ platform Breitbart News, co-founded by Stephen Bannon.
On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, President Nikos Christodoulides spoke with Breitbart’s Washington DC Bureau Chief Matthew Boyle, following in the path of two of his cabinet ministers.
According to Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis, at the heart of the discussion was “the substantial upgrading of Cyprus-US relations in recent years and the continued expansion of cooperation across areas of shared and strategic interest”.
The spokesperson noted in a social media post that “Cyprus is emerging as an increasingly important strategic partner for the United States in the Eastern Mediterranean”.
He said the interview focused particularly on Cyprus’ energy plans and their broader regional significance, as well as its “growing role as a reliable partner of the US and a pillar of security and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean”.
President Christodoulides also outlined his efforts to resume Cyprus peace talks aimed at achieving a comprehensive settlement, within the agreed framework and based on the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, said Letymbiotis.
Preferred channel
The present government has shown a particular interest in Breitbart News, believed to be one of the preferred news outlets of US President Donald Trump – who is currently in a legal battle with several media organisations over his decision to bar them from White House access.
In July, Energy Minister Michael Damianos welcomed the fact his interview with Breitbart News was reposted by Trump on social media, saying this reflected growing American engagement with Cyprus' hydrocarbon and energy security plans.
Last February, also in an interview with Breitbart, Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos said Trump was in a “unique position” to restructure the “global order” and shape world affairs in a way that no American president has been in for generations.
Leaving New York
Christodoulides wraps up the UN High-Level Week in New York with a meeting today with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng, followed by discussions with the American Jewish Committee (AJC) leadership, and a meeting with the United Arab Emirates Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology Dr Sultan Al Jaber. The day concludes with a testimonial dinner of the Federation of Cypriot American Organisations.
The president is scheduled to leave for Cyprus on Sunday, unless the UN chief decides to convene a last-minute trilateral with the two Cypriot leaders following Saturday’s meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman.
