US President Donald Trump said he had held separate telephone conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, expressing hope that the war in Ukraine could soon be brought to an end.
Speaking during a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara, Trump said both leaders appeared willing to reach an agreement.
Trump describes lengthy call with Putin
“We had a very good conversation with President Putin,” Trump said, adding that the call had lasted for a considerable amount of time.
Trump said he spoke with Zelensky immediately afterwards.
“I think they both want to make a deal,” he said. “It is a shame that it has taken so long, but I think we will get it settled, if everything goes well, soon.”
Trump and Zelensky expected to meet
Trump and Zelensky are expected to meet on Wednesday during the NATO summit.
The planned meeting comes as Ukraine has intensified attacks against Russia’s energy sector in recent months, while large-scale Russian strikes have killed 50 people in Kyiv during July alone.
