Hostage Situation at Bank in Western Germany as Police Seal Off Area

Several people are believed to be inside the Volksbank branch in Sinzig, including a cash transport driver, police say.

 

A hostage situation is under way at a bank in the western German town of Sinzig, prompting a major police operation and the closure of the surrounding area.

Police said they believe several suspects and hostages are inside the branch. One of the hostages is understood to be the driver of a cash transport vehicle.

According to initial reports, the incident began on Friday morning when a man approached a bank employee outside the branch, threatened him and forced him into the building. The people involved are believed to be in the vault area.

A police spokesperson said there was no danger to members of the public outside the cordoned-off zone. Authorities have sealed off the area around the bank while the operation continues.

Sinzig is located in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, south of Bonn.
