AKEL and Volt are calling for a rally on Monday, 22 June, at 6.30pm, outside the Law Office of the Republic in Nicosia, following the Anti-Corruption Authority's findings on the book "Mafia State."
In a joint statement, the two parties said:
"The findings of the Anti-Corruption Authority on the book 'Mafia State' have confirmed what society has been experiencing for years under the Anastasiades system of power. The enormous entanglement of interests and the scandals of the Anastasiades-DISY government, as well as the practices of covering up corruption. The offences for which former President of the Republic Nikos Anastasiades and those around him are being investigated are extremely serious and bring shame on the country. Criminal offences that are added to the glaring conflicts of interest, the manipulation of institutions and the arrogance of this closed system of interests, which continues to this day under the current Christodoulides government.
Impunity for all of this can no longer continue. It is the universal demand of society that there be an independent and untainted investigation into everything recorded in the findings. That this system of vested interests and cover-ups be dismantled. That the rule of law and legality prevail.
We therefore issue an open call to society, with the following demands:
- The immediate resignation of Giorgos Savvides and Savvas Angelides from the positions of Attorney General and Deputy Attorney General.
- Independent investigation into the offences recorded in the findings.
- The bringing of suspects to justice, accountability and punishment of the guilty.
- The restoration of institutions and the rule of law in our country."
