Former President of the Republic Nikos Anastasiades has weighed in on Sunday's election result, describing it as a "celebration of democracy" and a clear message from voters against what he called toxic political practices.
In a written statement, Anastasiades congratulated all newly elected members of the House of Representatives, wishing them a productive term. He reserved particular praise for DISY president Annita Demetriou, as well as the party's leadership, cadres, and candidates, noting that DISY had established itself as a force of "prudence and stability" through a responsible political stance and firm commitment to European Union values and social liberalism.
The former president said the result represented an unambiguous response from the electorate to "practices of mud-slinging, defamation and character assassination," and to political forces that, in his words, had invested in toxicity, division and the denigration of political opponents.
He closed by expressing hope that the message sent by voters would lead all political forces to understand that the country's progress can only be achieved through responsibility and cooperation.
