Cyprus, Greece and Israel have published the list of names that will be assigned to weather systems expected to produce severe weather across the Eastern Mediterranean during the 2026-27 season.
The naming system has been in place since 1 October 2021 under a cooperation framework between the national meteorological services of the three countries.
Joint naming system for severe weather
The system applies to meteorological systems that may affect the region during both the colder and warmer periods of the year.
The aim is to improve public awareness and communication regarding significant weather events expected to affect Cyprus, Greece and Israel.
Names selected for the 2026-27 season
For the period from October 2026 to September 2027, the three meteorological services jointly compiled a list of names reflecting the linguistic identities of the participating countries.
The names, which will be used in alphabetical order and written in Latin characters, are:
Argos, Bar, Chabrias, Dorothea, Eitan, Filippa, Glafkos, Hadar, Ikaros, Jason, Kedem, Laskarina, Morfeas, Nadia, Odysseas, Persefoni, Roxani, Sisyfos, Tamar, Uranos, Vergina, Wasim, Xanthe, Ypnos and Zohar.
Cooperation launched in 2021
The weather-naming initiative was introduced on 1 October 2021 as part of cooperation between the meteorological authorities of Cyprus, Greece and Israel.
Under the arrangement, names are assigned to weather systems expected to generate particularly intense weather conditions in the Eastern Mediterranean.
