Businessman Andreas Papaellinas has rejected recent allegations by MEP Fidias Panayiotou regarding photovoltaic installations and his business activities, describing as false claims that he earns millions of euros from solar parks.
In a written statement, Papaellinas said the assertions "do not reflect reality" and create misleading impressions about his company's operations.
According to Papaellinas, the photovoltaic systems referenced by Panayiotou were developed solely to meet the energy needs of his businesses and to reduce their environmental footprint.
"As such, the claim that we earn millions from photovoltaic parks, as stated by Mr Panayiotou, is untrue," he said.
Calls for fact-based debate
Papaellinas also criticised the manner in which the allegations were made, arguing that public statements about individuals and businesses should be based on verified information.
"The public discussion on energy costs is entirely legitimate and necessary," he said.
He added that the issue directly affects households, businesses and the competitiveness of the Cypriot economy, making it all the more important that the debate be conducted on the basis of facts and documented evidence.
Appeal for consultation
The businessman said elected officials should engage with all parties involved before drawing conclusions.
"Mr Fidias Panayiotou, as an MEP, has a duty to discuss these matters with all stakeholders before reaching conclusions," he said.
According to Papaellinas, creating impressions through inaccurate claims does not contribute either to informed public debate or to efforts to address energy costs in Cyprus.
