Buckle Up: Police Launch Weekend Seat Belt Checks Across Cyprus

Officers will focus on seat belts and child restraints after 4,075 violations were recorded in the first half of 2026.

 

Cyprus Police will carry out intensified nationwide traffic checks on 22 and 23 August 2026, focusing on the use of seat belts and child or booster seats. The operation follows thousands of seat belt offences recorded during the first six months of the year.

What officers will check

According to a police statement, checks will cover both drivers and passengers, with particular attention paid to the correct use of seat belts and the transportation of children in the required safety seats.

More than 4,000 violations

During the first half of 2026, Police issued 4,075 fixed penalty notices to drivers and passengers for failing to wear a seat belt.

A further 178 violations were recorded for transporting passengers in seats that were not securely fixed.

Aim of the operation

Police said the checks and accompanying awareness activities are intended to prevent serious and fatal road collisions, strengthen road safety awareness and improve safety across the road network.
